PRE AP/IB CHEMISTRY
2007-2008

MRS. ALEXANDER

Chemistry is an exciting and relevant subject.  The following guidelines have been developed to assure you the best opportunity possible for a happy and successful year in chemistry.

PRE-AP/IB:

In addition to Pre-AP Chemistry being accelerated, you will be required to apply concepts to advanced problems, cover some additional material, complete a few required projects, perform additional lab work, and write formal lab reports.

MATERIALS:

pencil & pen, three ring notebook (two inch at least), notebook paper, scientific calculator, spiral for notes to be kept in a notebook, a bound essay book for recording laboratory notes

HELP SESSIONS:

Get help when the problem arises:  Do not wait until the day before the test.  Tutorial will be every morning at 7:45

TAKS

You will be taking the science TAKS test in the spring of this year.  The test covers Biology and IPC topics.  You will be required to participate in TAKS reviews in the spring that will count as part of your grade.

CLASS-WORK-HOMEWORK:

There is a difference between understanding a problem or concept the teacher is demonstrating and being able to use or apply the same concepts.  The key to making the ideas and skills we study your own is class-work and homework as well as being attentive.  Class-work/homework will be graded periodically.

LABORATORY

Each student will receive and read a copy of lab safety rules.  After reading and discussing the safety rules each student will sign a safety contract.

GRADES:

No work may be turned in after the work has been graded and returned to the class.

I calculate your grade using a point system.

Possible points:  daily quizzes = 50, lab reports = 50, homework-class-work = 20, TAKS assignments = 50, completion = 10, test = 150, required projects = 75

GRADE = (total earned points  /  total possible points)    X    100

The lowest test grade each six weeks may be replaced by the six weeks exam.

REQUIRED PROJECTS:

There will be a required project assigned the first, second, fourth and fifth six weeks.

Required project instructions and due dates are posted on Mrs. A's web site.

Extra credit is offered each six weeks in the form of  an assignment titled “Chemical Reaction” assignment.  Additional extra credit opportunities are offered the third and sixth six weeks.

Extra credit assignment instructions and due dates are posted on Mrs. A's web site

You will receive a progress report or report card every three weeks

NOTEBOOK

You are required to keep all class notes, assignments and handouts organized and in a three ring notebook.  A maximum of 15 points will be awarded and added to your exam semester score for a complete (all preparation material from the beginning of school each semester) and neat notebook.

CONDUCT:

You are expected to follow all school regulations, give me your un-divided attention when asked for and come to class ready to learn.  Be courteous and to do your own work to the best of your ability.  If you are tardy, sign the notebook on the small table by the door.  Please do not interrupt class by explaining your tardiness.

MAKE-UP WORK:

When you miss class check with of a fellow classmate or talk to me outside of class time.  If you miss a week or more of school, you will need to see me before or after school to schedule your make-up work.  To do well you must make an effort to be in class everyday
