Your team of three is employed by the
EPA to
develop an environmental awareness educational program targeting high
school students. You will
research a current environmental issue involving chemistry and prepare
either a web site, or a PowerPoint
presentation designed to educate the viewers. The presentation should be interesting and
compelling yet with
the primary focus to educate.
You must provide a CD of your web site or PowerPoint production.
Each member in separate sealed envelope will describe the participation
and cooperation of the other members of the group.

Here is a list of possible subjects. Feel free to submit
one that is not on the list, but it must be approved.

Ozone
Depletion |

Alternative
Fuels |
 |
Global Warming |
 |
Acid Rain |

Carbon

Radon |

Environmental aspects of nuclear

 |
Water pollution (narrow this topic
to a particular problem) |
 |
Hazardous waste (narrow this topic
to a particular problem) |
|
In your
presentation:
- Identify the issue (What is the problem, what is the controversy?
Describe both sides if there are rivaling opinions regarding the
impact on the environment.)
- Discuss
the chemistry behind the supposed problem (What chemicals and chemical
reactions are involved? Why does the problem occur? State any counter
claims to whether a problem exists or not. Describe BOTH sides.)
- Discuss
the assumed problems associated with the issue (Who is harmed? Who is
concerned? Why should we be concerned?)
- Discuss
ways to combat the problem. (What are the pros and cons of each
method?)
- Included pictures that demonstrate the effect of the environmental
problem. If there is a differing view point to whether the problem
exists provide the opposition's explanation for the pictures.
- Included pictures and graphics to add interest and to illustrate your
point.
- Included a reference page
- If you
create a webpage each linked page must have a link back to your
homepage and a link to my homepage roomd116.com
-
The presentations will be scored based on the quality
and quantity of information they contain as well as the organizational
design and quality of presentation.
|
Keep a running list of books, web sites, etc. that you
use as resources so you can easily construct a reference page at the end
of the project. Trying to remember a website that you accessed
three weeks before will be difficult. Avoid a random list of
undeveloped "facts". A few well-developed ideas is preferable to a
paragraph that mentions 100 detrimental effects to the environment, but
does not explain any of them. Develop the ideas - don't leave them
vague! Focus on what makes your issue important. Why should
anybody care?!

Project Evaluation Form of Team Members
Print and fill out the
Evaluation Form of Team Members. Turn in your evaluations in a
sealed envelope with your project. Each member must participate in each
aspect of the project cooperatively with the team. Do not try and
divided and conquer this must be a team effort. You will not receive
credit for the project without satisfactory evaluations from all team
members.
